Charitable Gift Annuity

The quiet life Frank McCulloch leads these days at Spring Lake Village is atypical of times past. He is known as the last journalist to have met and talked in person with Howard Hughes. Ask him some time to describe his midnight phone call from Mr. Hughes that resulted two hours later in a mysterious plane ride in a 707 with "Howard at the controls, and me making small talk with Hughes' actress wife, Jean Peters."

A journalist's zeal for "getting the story" often causes conflict with those who prefer the story not be told. During the course of his career Frank received death threats from mob bosses. He was told in person by Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy to kill a story on the Teamsters because, "You're going to spoil my case against Hoffa!" President Lyndon Johnson wasn't all that happy with the stories he wrote about American casualties in Vietnam and wrote to the Editor in Chief of Time Inc. to suggest he send the "bald fellow" home. Johnson later said that a photo spread by Frank had made it impossible for the U.S. to remain in Vietnam.

By 2001, when he and his late wife, Jakie, of 64 years moved to Spring Lake Village, Frank was still intensely interested in what was going on in the world, but he had more time to focus on what it took to provide a secure future. After a careful examination of the pros and cons, he decided a Charitable Gift Annuity was something that would help him and Jakie achieve this goal.

Frank: : "I didn't know anything about Charitable Gift Annuities, but after doing a little research, it seemed to me that the combination of a guaranteed high rate of return along with tax free income was hard to beat."

Frank has received many awards for outstanding journalism. On October 22, 2009, he was honored at the University of Nevada Alumni of the Year banquet.
